Aussie voters not fans of online in-play betting

Aussie voters not fans of online in-play betting

Leaked poll data shows Australian voters could punish the current federal coalition government if it relaxes the ban on online in-play sports betting.

On Sunday, The Australian published details of a Crosby Textor poll commissioned by the Liberal/National government that showed 35% of voters would be less likely to vote for the coalition in this year’s federal election if the government relaxed the online in-play ban. Only 10% said they would be more likely to vote for the coalition if it allowed online in-play bets.

The poll also showed 33% of voters would be more likely to vote for the coalition partners if gambling laws were left as they are or if the government closed the loopholes that enabled Aussie-licensed online betting operators to introduce digital workarounds intended to circumvent the online in-play ban.

The poll found that a mere 21% of respondents supported legal online in-play bets while 61% stood opposed. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of respondents believed the government should more vigorously enforce existing gambling laws via the use of fines and bans, while just 15% stood opposed. Similarly, 65% supported closing loopholes to make online in-play bets explicitly illegal, while just 18% stood opposed.

The 2001 Interactive Gambling Act (IGA) restricts in-play sports wagers to over the telephone or in-person at a licensed land-based betting facility. The government recently conducted a review of the IGA, the results of which are due to be released any day now.

Aussie-licensed online betting operators have argued that the online in-play ban is archaic and point out that the activity is widely available via internationally-licensed online operators serving the Australian market. Anti-gambling campaigners, the racing industry and domestic land-based operators like Tabcorp and Tatts Group have pushed back against any further liberalization of the Aussie online market.

Reading the Aussie in-play tea leaves is becoming increasingly difficult. In January, Alan Tudge, the assistant minister of social services tasked with overseeing the IGA review, publicly suggested that legal in-play wagering wouldn’t increase match- or spot-fixing controversies, leading many to conclude that the online ban was not long for this world.

But an unidentified federal minister told The Australian that the Crosby Textor poll revealed it was “not politically smart” to embrace gambling liberalization “at any time, let alone an election year.” The minister went on to say that the public held a dim view of the “UK and Irish bookies” and the “greedy” sports leagues pushing for an end to the online in-play restriction.

A consultant hired by an unidentified domestic betting operator told The Australian that Aussie-licensed international firms like William Hill, Ladbrokes, Bet365 and Paddy Power may have won over “some policy purist bureaucrats and a handful of advisers” on the wisdom of ending the in-play ban but these firms have failed to convince “those that matter, the elected officials” that the change would be good policy or a shrewd political play.

888 to Sponsor 2016 WSOP

888 to Sponsor 2016 WSOP

The world’s second largest online poker room, 888Poker, is the official sponsor for the 2016 World Series of Poker, meaning players can qualify for World Series of Poker events via 888Poker’s online satellites.

888Poker will be the official sponsor of the 2016 World Series of Poker (WSOP) when it kicks off in May. The deal, an extension of the one signed in 2015, allows 888Poker to offer their players a route to Vegas via their online satellite program.

888Poker Unveiled as Official Sponsors of the 2016 WSOPThe relationship will see the 888 regalia adorn the WSOP website, Live Updates page, and ESPN coverage of the event. It’s another sign of strength for an online poker room very much on the up and up.

Only last week, the WSOP released their official schedule. There will be 69 bracelet events. WSOP officials have called it the ‘the most ambitious and diverse schedule in the 47-year history.’

Eagle-eyed observers would have seen the not very cryptic clue that 888Poker would have an involvement in the festival. See if you can spot what the clue was?

Event #54: $888 Crazy Eights No-Limit Hold’em (8-Handed), with a guaranteed first prize of $888,888.

888Poker recently hired Kara Scott to become their new ambassador. Scott is fast becoming a mainstay at the WSOP in her role as the anchor for the ESPN coverage.

Will 888 Also Sponsor 2016 WSOPE?

Part of that 2015 agreement saw 888Poker also sponsor the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) in Berlin. According to the most recent shuffling of the WSOP deck, 2016 should be the year that they return to Southern Hemisphere for the second World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific (WSOP-APAC). However, word on the street is that won’t happen.

During the press release of the 2016 WSOP schedule, mention was made of the Big One for One Drop event being held in 2016, but not as part of the summer extravaganza in Las Vegas. The most sensible option would be a second successive WSOPE with the $1m buy-in event taking centre stage. If that happens, will 888Poker get a piece of the action?

What About PokerStars?

Amaya Gaming tried their best to take the limelight away from the inaugural Global Poker League (GPL) Draft, when they announced plans to launch their PokerStars and Full Tilt brands in New Jersey, Monday, March 21.

I must admit; my first thought was a Moneymaker one. The opportunity for PokerStars to offer an online route to Vegas, albeit a small one, was enough to whet this poker fans appetite.

With 888Poker signing an extension to remain the official sponsor for the 2016 series, does this mean that PokerStars are out of the running when it comes to their ability to send online qualifiers to the WSOP?

888Poker sent 128 players to the WSOP Main Event last year. One of them, a 58-year old bar owner, Tommy Yates, qualified for a cent and turned it into a $19,500 cash. The eventual winner, Joe McKeehen, also qualified via 888Poker.

Lessons learned from Oscars 2016 surprises and upsets

Lessons learned from Oscars 2016 surprises and upsets

After watching last night’s Oscar telecast there were some clear observations which I’ve known for a while but don’t always follow. I’ll pass them along along with lessons I learned.

1. The SAG Awards are the best predictor of Oscar success. Every single winner of the SAG Award also won the Oscar. This included 2 upsets when Mark Rylance beat Sylvester Stallone for best supporting actor and when Spotlight won best film. SAG members make up the largest portion of the Academy voters so it only makes sense their picks will hold more sway than other voters. It was my belief that Sylvester Stallone and The Revenant would win anyways since neither was nominated for the SAG and it would be rectified at the Oscars. But as some pundits pointed out, when an actor or film isn’t nominated for a SAG there’s a reason and the actors will stick to their guns and support their colleague’s award picks. Aside from Braveheart no film that wasn’t nominated for best cast won the Oscar and with the new voting format at the Oscars a non-nomination makes that film even less likely. Lesson learned.

2. There’s no such thing as momentum. Heading into the Oscars everyone talked about the films that had the momentum because they were getting all the buzz. These included Sylvester Stallone, Kate Winslet and of course The Revenant for best picture. The actors were on all the talk shows, they were winning all the late industry accolades and they were getting the late awards like the BAFTA awards. But in the end the awards went to the early favorites and in particular to the SAG winners. The majority in the Academy send their picks before any of these late events occur so “momentum” means little.

“Miracle upsets can happen . . . “

Watch Andre Coimbra Turn $10 Into $1,000

A few years ago, Portugal’s Team Pro Online representative, Andre Coimbra, attempted to turn a $100 bankroll into $100,000 playing tournaments for an entire year.

2009 Magic: The Gathering World Champion failed to hit his goal (he made $70,000), but he did learn a few things along the way namely that his followers preferred it when he was playing for the same stakes as them (micro & low).

With this in mind, Coimbra has begun a new mission to turn $10 into $1,000 playing micro and low stakes Sit n Go’s and tournaments. He has created a personalised Twitch channel, and will be playing live so his followers can keep tabs on his goal progression.

Last time the deadline was 12-months.

This time, there isn’t one.

“I think that the process is more important than the goal,” wrote Coimbra.

At the time of writing his bankroll has reached $50.

Check out his progress here.

NBA Tuesday Preview & Free Pick – Atlanta at Golden State

NBA Tuesday Preview & Free Pick - Atlanta at Golden State

The Atlanta Hawks will kick-off a three-game West Coast swing this Tuesday night with a stop at Oracle Arena to tangle with the Golden State Warriors. VietBet has opened the Warriors as heavy 11.5-point home favorites and the betting odds for the total have been set at 225. Game time on NBA TV has been set for 10:30 p.m. (ET).

The Hawks are an even 5-5 straight-up in their last 10 games and holding down the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings at 33-27 on the year.

They have managed to cover as home favorites in two SU victories against Chicago and Chicago following a 102-92 home loss to Golden State on Feb. 22 as six-point underdogs on VietBet’s closing NBA betting line. Atlanta is 14-15 SU on the road this season with a 13-15-1 record against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in six of its last nine games overall.

Atlanta remains one of the better defensive teams in the league this season with a points-allowed average of 99.7. It is averaging 102.2 points per game with Paul Millsap leading the way. He is scoring 17.5 PPG, but he has failed to post more than 13 points in four of his last five starts. The Hawks are shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from three-point range.

The basketball betting odds that have been posted on this game at VietBet, have dropped as Stephen Curry is questionable for the game tonight.:

Atlanta Hawks +10 (+105) Golden State Warriors -10 (-105)

Over 220 points +105 Under 225 points -105

The pursuit of a new NBA single-season record for SU wins continues with Golden State’s 53-5 record through its first 58 games. The Warriors’ current winning streak stands at five games following Saturday’s big 121-118 victory over Oklahoma City on the road in a game that ended as a PUSH on VietBet’s closing three-point betting line. The NBA’s top team has not been the best bet lately with a 2-5-1 record ATS in its last eight games and the total has gone OVER in four of its last six outings.

This will be Golden State’s first home game since Feb. 9 so you know the home-town crowd will be fired-up to see their team try and remain perfect at Oracle Arena this season. The Warriors are 24-0 SU at home with an even 12-12 record ATS the total has gone OVER in three of their last five home games.

Golden State has been a tough bet at times this year given the large spreads it has had to cover, but I am laying the 11.5 points and taking the home team in this one given just how long the Warriors have been on the road.

Vietbet.eu is your international headquarters for the best in NBA betting action, offering sports wagering in English, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish.

Basketball Betting – Kings Banged-Up Facing Revenge-Minded Thunder

Basketball Betting – Kings Banged-Up Facing Revenge-Minded Thunder

It does not exactly present the most advantageous psychological situation when you are just coming off a loss to a team you should have beaten, but when that team is the defending world champions, on a pace to set a record for most regular-season wins, it’s got to be doubly hurtful. That’s the situation the Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves in as they take the floor in a Monday game against the Sacramento Kings, slated to get underway at 10:05 PM ET. BetAnySports customers know that even after the opening tipoff, they have an opportunity to continue the action, wagering in real time while the game is in progress through the state-of-the-art software provided through Live Betting Extra.

Oklahoma City is 41-18 straight-up and 22-35-2 against of the NBA pointspread. They are the third-place team in the West, with almost no hope of cracking the top two. But they have to worry about the Los Angeles Clippers, who are only 2.5 games behind them. And they didn’t help their cause on Saturday, as they blew a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to Golden State, which forced overtime and then won on a miraculous shot by MVP Steph Curry with less than a second to go. Oklahoma City had the huge edge in rebounding (76-41), but Russell Westbrook had a bad night from the field, hitting just 10 at of his 29 shots, and an interesting pattern continued, as the Thunder, which is not the most balanced team offensively, lost their 10th game in 19 attempts when both Westbrook and Kevin Durant each score at least 25 points.

Please take note that the Kings have listed two players as doubtful here – Rajon Rondo, who sat out with a thumb injury in the last game, and Rudy Gay, who has been dealing with a bad shoulder.

That is reflected in the basketball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, where, with reduced juice attached, Oklahoma City is the clear favorite:

Oklahoma City Thunder -10 (-102) Sacramento Kings +10 (-108)

Over 226.5 points -102 Under 226.5 points -108

This is generally not the best spot for the Thunder, which has covered just seven out of 26 road games this season, and it is a strange thing to hear from first-year coach Billy Donovan when he talks of his squad being able to actually take something from the Golden State game, other than a lot of disappointment. We say strange, because it’s not what you are expecting to hear from the coach of the team that aspires to win an NBA championship.

If the Thunder are flat for this one, Sacramento is fully capable of pulling off the upset. They got close in the first meeting between these two teams, losing 98-95 on December 6. And Sacramento shocked OKC on its home floor on January 4, winning 116-104 and getting monster efforts from DeMarcus Cousins (33 points, 19 rebounds) and Rondo (19 assists). Rondo, it should be noted, is the NBA leader in the assist category, though as mentioned, his availability is doubtful.

BetAnySports patrons know that the Kings don’t exactly hold up their end of the bargain on the defensive end of the floor. They have surrendered 46% shooting over the course of the season, and 115.6 points on average in their last fourteen games. Of course, this is what you can usually expect out of a George Karl team, and the Thunder is second in the league as far as Offensive Rating is concerned (with a 110-point average).

Oklahoma City is not a model of defensive efficiency, though (14th in Defensive Rating). And many pundits, including TNT;’s Charles Barkley, have remarked that they aren’t likely to challenge the West’s big two (Golden State and San Antonio) because they don’t defend nearly well enough.

BetAnySports offers tremendous free play bonuses, as well as the chance to continue wagering after the opening tip through Live Betting Extra….Don’t forget that you can make deposits using your major credit card or the virtual currency of Bitcoin!
